Coder for the Public Sector

Support the mission with cloud developer workspaces

Coder moves developer workspaces to your cloud and centralizes their creation and management. Secure your DevSecOps pipeline while keeping developers in flow with the power of the cloud and superior developer experience.

Federal

Coder is used by some of the most security conscious agencies in the federal government and is authorized for use in several highly secured environments within the Department of Defense.

State and local

Your citizenry is demanding greater access to online and automated services. Accelerate your software development process with Coder by removing the obstacles that keep your developers from writing code.

Education

Coder empowers training at scale. Students spend time learning how to code, not struggling to build their environments. Instructors spend time teaching, not troubleshooting students’ device configurations.

The developer platform for your software factory

By moving developer workspaces to the cloud and automating their configuration and creation, Coder lets your developers focus on their mission, writing code, eliminating distractions like environment configuration.

Zero trust and air gap ready

Coder works seamlessly within the most restrictive air-gapped environments. Move dev environments to the cloud and simplify zero-trust implementation by keeping code off of laptops.

  • Pull deployment resources into your air-gapped environment
  • Restrict developers to whitelisted IDE extensions
Architecture layers

Reduce common vulnerabilities and exposures

Harden your Docker images to your agency’s exact requirements. Updates to the images can be pushed to environments created from those images, ensuring all developers are using the most secure version.

  • Scan images for compliance
  • Restrict access to approved images

Coder is a cloud native offering that runs its control plane as well as workspaces on top of Kubernetes, so it should work on any Kubernetes cluster, including managed offerings from the hyperscale cloud providers (Google, Amazon, Microsoft) or your own infrastructure, whether physical or virtualized.

Coder enables organizations to centralize development infrastructure, allowing IT administrators to apply robust security controls in a single location. For example, organizations can enforce ingress and egress network restrictions, ensure that developers only use approved software, and enable teams to separate responsibilities for application- and infrastructure-level components, such as application middleware.

At present, developers configure access permissions for their Dev URLs, and it is not possible to restrict creation of “public” URLs. In order to restrict traffic within your organization, we recommend configuring your firewall or load balancer to reject all outside traffic, thereby rendering public Dev URLs inaccessible from outside your organization at the network level.

Coder supports integration with common Single and Same Sign-On technologies, including OpenID Connect (OIDC) and OAuth2, for both authentication and authorization.

Coder works seamlessly within the most restrictive air-gapped environments. Note, however, that Coder cannot be deployed in an air-gapped environment during the 60-day free trial.

Code-server: the heart of Coder

Code-server is the primary open source project we maintain. It allows developers to use a browser to access remote dev environments running VS Code. Coder builds upon the success of code-server and adds features designed for enterprise teams including support for additional IDEs and advanced security features.
